Nearly all adopted children are asked questions about adoption. Children sometimes find it difficult and uncomfortable to answer, as they don’t always know what to say, or they regret, afterwards, what they did say. They are often left with a mixture of many emotions. Parents have also felt these emotions when questioned about their adoptive families. This one-day conference will assist adoptive children and their parents in dealing with these situations.

 Parent’s Program: W.I.S.E. Up! The World about Adoption!

There are a number of parenting tasks which are unique to families formed through adoption. Perhaps the most difficult is supporting our children when they are called upon to explain adoption to the rest of the world. They are not asked whether they would like to shoulder this role. Instead, there is an assumption that they are the best source of information, and worse, that their adoption stories and love for their families should be open to investigation. Parents will learn how to support their child even when they are not with them.

 Children’s Program

(For children in grades 1-7)

The children’s “W.I.S.E. Up!” workshop will engage them in activities that help them to identify and express their feelings around adoption, especially those feelings around being “quizzed” about their adoption story. They will also be given tools which will empower them to deal with the consistent challenge of explaining adoption and their adoption stories to peers, neighbors and even strangers.
